Estamos en EE.UU. en los a\u00f1os 20: en el verano de 1925 un profesor llamado John Scopes,de 24 a\u00f1os de edad, que ense\u00f1a ciencias es demandado por el Estado de Tennessee por violar las leyes anti-evoluci\u00f3n que se hab\u00edan extendido por muchos Estados de la Uni\u00f3n: seg\u00fan esas leyes, es contrario a derecho ense\u00f1ar teor\u00edas que contravengan la Creaci\u00f3n divina.<\/p>\n
Aunque la prohibici\u00f3n de las teor\u00edas de la evoluci\u00f3n no ser\u00edan declaradas anti-constitucionales hasta 1968 y por tanto abolidas en Arkansas, \u00faltimo estado que las manten\u00eda, este juicio supuso un fuerte rev\u00e9s para los creacionistas y el primer debate nacional al respecto:<\/p>\n
A jury of twelve men, including ten (mostly middle-aged) farmers and eleven regular church-goers, was quickly selected. The trial adjourned for the weekend. On Sunday, William Jennings Bryan delivered the sermon at Dayton’s Methodist Church. He used the occasion to attack the defense strategy in the Scopes case. As Bryan spoke, Judge Raulston and his entire family listened attentively from their front pew seats.<\/p>\n
The Scopes trial by no means ended the debate over the teaching of evolution, but it did represent a significant setback for the anti-evolution forces.
